“A place where influence of sea is not present and people with a strong marine love…”, that city is Ankara and that place is Middle East Technical University (METU). METU Subaqua Society is product of this strong love and devotion.
Founded by a group of students and academics in 1985 METU Subaqua Society (METU-SAT); which sees the scuba diving is a tool instead of a goal, has been contributing to the promotion research and preservation of cultural, historic and natural values of Turkish coasts and internal waters. Throughout the history of METU-SAT, it has carried out various projects and organized various activities in order to realize this purpose and raise awareness on these issues. Some of these projects include but not limited to underwater cave and wreckage explorations, underwater ecological research. At the end of last year, in order to draw attention to the pollution in the seas, the “litter-free sea” project; which is held in Mersin, achieved cleaner coastline by providing the litter to the municipality for recycling. Another project; “Nondisabled METU meets Blue”, was intended to create social awareness addition and was awarded with activity prize of the year at METU with a motto of “Nothing is an obstacle for Diving even Ankara”. Last but not least, “Sea, Nature, Water” symposium is organized to commemorate the Kemal Gökhan Türe; who is one of the founders of METU-SAT, with the participation of academicians from different universities and nature-conscious naturalists.
